New iPhone Security Threat? Not So Fast…

Before you get too riled up…

Although there have been social media posts warning of an impending security issue due to the latest updates, it’s been blown a little out of proportion.
Yes, your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch will automatically turn on the new feature called NameDrop.
Yes, this new feature allows data from your phone like photos and contact info to be shared to other nearby Apple devices.
Here’s what the social posts don’t really mention:
In order for any information to be transferred using this NameDrop feature, the devices need to be within an inch of each other and both devices need to click a button to confirm they consent to the data transfer.
Do you need to worry about strangers accessing your photos at the grocery store? No. Could this be a useful feature to share your phone number with someone? Yes.
But if you want to switch it off, here’s how:

  • Go To Settings
  • Tap “General”
  • Tap “AirDrop”
  • Turn off “Bringing Devices Together”
